Magers Victory For Oilers, 2-1
Goaltender Marty Magers stopped 54 of 55 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, then stopped another three out of four shootout attempts, backstopping the Tulsa Oilers to a 2-1 road shootout victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Tuesday night.
Derek Merlini broke a scoreless tie giving the Oilers the lead with less than a minute to play in the second period. It stayed that way until Joel Irving scored on a power play rebound with seven and a half minutes left in the third period. The goal came on Rio Grande Valley’s 47th shot of the game.
In the shootout Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored in the first round for Rio Grande Valley. But Jeff Gumaer, Aaron Davis and Marty Standish scored on the Oilers final three attmpts while Magers stoned the next three Killer Bee shooters. The Oilers had a 3-1 edge in the shoototut, preventing Rio Grande Valley’s final attempt.
The Oilers played the game without their leading scorer, Rob Hisey, who had been called up to Sringfield Falcons of the American Hockey League on Monday. He had a goal and assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Providence Bruins.
The Oilers host the Mississippi RiverKings Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
