Wiley and Marcellus Latest Additions To Oilers Alumni Game
TULSA, OK – Two more memorable names are returning to Tulsa later this month for the Oilers Alumni Game.
Former Oilers Jim Wiley and Todd Marcellus will lace up the skates in the fourth annual event on Saturday, August 25th at 7 p.m. at the Oilers Ice Center (64th and Mingo).
“It’s not about playing in the game, it’s about reminiscing and reconnecting with all of the guys,” said Wiley, now the CHL Director of Operations. “We lose track of people and this is a way for us to maintain the connection we all have who are a part of the Oilers organization.”
Wiley, who will play in his second Alumni Game, was a 25-year old center when he arrived in Tulsa in 1975. In his first season as an Oiler, the Ontario native scored 96 points (33 goals, 63 assists) in 76 games. After playing half of the 1976-77 with the Vancouver Canucks, Wiley returned to Tulsa and helped lead the Oilers to the CHL Finals. He spent two more productive seasons in Tulsa before ending his playing career.
“I had never walked into a community where people where so dang friendly,” remembered Wiley. “I’ve had the privilege to play in great places, but Tulsa is on top of the list in terms of memories and great places for me and my family.”
From 1984-2008, Wiley was the head coach of eight teams in seven different leagues, including a run of 57 games with the San Jose Sharks in 1995-96. He has worked in the CHL front office since September of 2008.
Marcellus, who has played in each of the three previous Alumni Games, spent the final three seasons (2002-2005) of his career with the Oilers. A prolific offensive player, Marcellus averaged better than a point per game in each of his three seasons. In the 2002-03 campaign, Marcellus notched a career-high 93 points (40 goals, 53 assists).
“We loved our time in Tulsa and it’s nice to always be welcomed back,” Marcellus said. “There was always such a sense of family around the Oilers so it’s a great opportunity to reunite with the fans and see some of the guys I used to play with.”
Marcellus, who fondly remembers the beginning of the 2004-05 season when the Oilers started 17-3, expects a laid back game when the alumni drop the puck.
“It’s usually pretty low-key out there on the ice,” said Marcellus. “We’ll get some exercise, but it’s more for the laughs than anything else.”
Today, Marcellus is a provincial manager for a pharmaceutical firm. He lives in Russell, Ontario with his wife Melissa and three children, Hannah, Ally, and Nolan.
Tickets to the Oilers Alumni Game are $10 for season ticket holders who purchase tickets before the day of the game, $15 for non-season ticket holders before the day of the game, and $20 for everyone on the day of the game.
