Steffes Named Oakley CHL Player of the Week
GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced on Monday that Tulsa Oilers center Gary Steffes has been named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 28, 2012.
Steffes, who leads the Oilers with 7 points through five games, recorded a goal and an assist in Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Quad City and followed up with a goal and assist on Saturday night in Quad City as the Oilers beat the Mallards 4-1. The Grand Blanc, Michigan native finished the weekend with another assist in Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Fort Worth Brahmas.
Now in his third season with the Oilers, Steffes has an outstanding +5 rating and has three multiple-point games to his credit. He leads the Oilers in shooting percentage and is tied for the team lead in goals, assists, and game-winning goals. A product of the University of Miami (Ohio), Steffes was named to the CHL All-Rookie team after the 2010-11 campaign in which he registered 43 points. Steffes, 25, increased his point total in his second year as a pro, finishing the 2011-12 season with 52 points. The durable center has not missed a single game since turning pro.
The Oilers are 3-1-1 on the young season, their best start since 2003-04. Up next for Tulsa, a visit to the Allen Americans on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
