Oilers Outlast Brahmas For First Home Win

TULSA, OK – The Tulsa Oilers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off the pesky Fort Worth Brahmas to post a 4-2 victory in front of 3,476 on Sunday afternoon at the BOK Center.  The win is Tulsa’s first at home and earned the Oilers five out of a possible six points over their three weekend games.
After a first period which saw the sides combine for only 12 shots and no goals, the Oilers came to life early in the second.  On their first power play of the game, the Oilers created a chance in front of the net when Ryan Cramer’s shot rebounded right to the tape of a waiting Ben Gordon who slid the puck beneath Larry Sterling for his second goal in as many nights.  At the 5:31 mark of the middle frame, Ryan Menei re-directed a Drew Akins pass into the upper corner of the net to push the Tulsa lead to 2-0.
With his side shorthanded later in the period, Gary Steffes created a breakaway but missed the net.  Steffes alertly batted the rebound back in front where a hustling Michel Beausoleil put it past Sterling and gave the Oilers a 3-0 advantage.  Just 35 seconds later, with their powerplay yet to expire, the Brahmas got on the board with a blue line blast from Cody Hamilton that ricocheted off traffic in front and past Ian Keserich.
The Oilers 3-1 lead held up until the 12:43 mark of the third when former Oiler Brendon Hodge rifled a shot from close range past Keserich to pull Fort Worth back within a goal.    That was all the offense the Brahmas could muster and Akins put the finishing touches on the Tulsa win with an empty netter at 19:42.  For Akins, it was his first goal and first multiple point game as an Oiler.
Tulsa improved to 3-1-1 on the season while Fort Worth suffered its first regulation loss and fell to 1-1-1.  The Oilers are back in action Wednesday night when they visit the Allen Americans for the first meeting of the season.  Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
