Karalis and Kaebel Added To Alumni Game Rosters
TULSA, OK – Two more recognizable names will be joining their former teammates in the fourth annual Oilers Alumni Game.
Tom Karalis and Klage Kaebel are taking part in the yearly reunion which will be held at the Oilers Ice Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 25th.
Karalis, 48, was part of the Oilers 1992-93 squad that captured the CHL Championship. In that first season, Karalis recorded 44 points in 56 games. After a brief stint in Wichita the following year, the defenseman returned to Tulsa and chipped in 6 goals to go along with 30 assists. Karalis went on to play three seasons in Europe but rejoined the Oilers prior to the 1997-98 season for his final year of professional hockey. The Montreal native has made his home in Tulsa for the last 20 years and has played in each of the previous Alumni Games.
“I’m glad the Oilers have this tradition because it’s always such a great time,” Karalis said. “It brings back a lot of memories and it can be a competitive game because a lot of us still have those competitive juices flowing. The old guys like me are going to have to step it up.”
Karalis works as a consultant for a telecommunications company and is the head coach of the Union High School hockey team. He and his wife Julie live in Bixby with their three children, Jack (9), Ellie (7), and Sophia (6).
From 2001-2006, Kaebel suited up for the Oilers in 242 games. The center, now 36 years old, scored 44 points in two different seasons in Tulsa and was part of the 2004-05 Oilers team which made the playoffs for the first time in four years. Kaebel, who also spent time in the WPHL and the ECHL, totaled 95 goals and 139 assists over a six year pro career. Originally from Illinois, Kaebel is just one of many former Oilers who decided to settle down in Tulsa.
“It’s good to see that so many guys have stayed in this city,” said Kaebel. “It really is a great hockey community and the Oilers organization has such a family feel to it. It’ll be good to reconnect with some of the guys and it’s always an honor to put on that Oilers jersey.”
Kaebel is invested in developing hockey talent here in the Tulsa area. Along with former Oiler Derek Toninato, Kaebel is running Full Tilt Hockey which puts on a series of camps and clinics to help kids develop their skills and reach a higher level.
“We want to take the next generation of hockey players in Tulsa and make them better,” Kaebel explained. “We’re committed to hockey in this town and hopefully we can turn out more professional players from this area.”
Kaebel works for Dollar-Thrifty Auto Group and lives in Bixby with his wife Brooke and two sons, Jaxson (5), and Jett (1).
Oilers fans are encouraged to attend the Alumni Game Pre-Party on Friday, August 24th at Woody’s Corner Bar (2nd and Elgin) in downtown Tulsa.
Tickets to the Oilers Alumni Game are $10 for season ticket holders who purchase tickets before the day of the game, $15 for non-season ticket holders before the day of the game, and $20 for everyone on the day of the game.
