With the Tulsa Oilers in Mississippi for their playoff series there will not be a Hockey Happy Hour Monday April 4.

Oilers Rally To Stay Alive 4-3

The Tulsa Oilers got third period goals from Braden Walls and Derek Eastman to come from behind for a 4-3 win over the Mississippi RiverKings Sunday night in Mississippi. The win keeps the Oilers alive in the opening round best-of-five series of the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup playoffs, which Mississippi leads two games to one.
 
Game four is in Mississippi Tuesday night at 7:05.
 
Mike Beausoleil scored his thrid power play goal of the playoffs (one in each game) at 2:21 of the first period, giving Tulsa its first lead of the series. But Chris Richards answered that back with a power play goal at 14:40.
 
Louis Dumont struck for Mississippi just 1:01 into the second period to give the homestanding RiverKIngs a 2-1 lead. With the Oilers on a two man advantage, Chris Auger of Mississippi cleared the puck out of his own zone ahead for Patrik Levesque who beat Oilers goaltender Trevor Cann for a  shorthanded goal. Levesque also has a goal in each game of the series.
 
While the Oilers were still on the power play Luke Lucyk deflected in a pass from Eastman , getting the Oilers back within a goal, settting the stage for the dramatic third period comeback.  
 
Walls’ goal was the Oilers first even strength goal of the series. And Eastman’s was his first of the season. He had 12 power play goals and one shorthanded goal during the regular season.
 
If the Oilers win game four Tuesday, a decisive fifth game will be in Tulsa Saturday night at 7:35.

Oilers In 0-2 Hole After 3-1 Loss

The Tulsa Oilers lost 3-1 to the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night, and now trail theur best of five opening round series in the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Playoffs two games to none.  Game three in the series is Sunday in Mississippi at 5:05 p.m.

Evgeny Timkin and Patrik Levesque each scored their second goal of the series in the first period. The Oilers drew within one in the second period when Mike Beausoleil tipped in a centering feed from Thomas Dignard to also collect his second goal fo the playoffs. It was also a power play goal.  All four goals Tulsa has scored in the two game series have come on the power play.

The Oilers ran into third period penalty trouble with three penalties  in the middle part of the period which put a crimp in their comebackbid. Chris Richards sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 32 seconds left to play.

The Oilers will try to stave off elimination Sunday and force a game four whcih would be played Tuesday in Mississippi. If  the Oilers win the next two games, a decisive fifth game would be played Saturday April 9th at the BOK Center.

Oilers Drop Opener, 7-3; Game 2 Friday

Three goals in the first half of the third period lifted the Mississippi RiverKings to a 7-3 win over the Tulsa Oilers Thursday night at the BOK Center. Mississippi took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five opening round series of the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Playoffs. Game two is Friday April 1 at the BOK Center at 7:35 p.m.

The Oilers scored a power play goal in each period, from Mike Beausoleil, Derek Eastman, and Bates Battaglia. But Mississippi had seven different scorers becoming the first road team in four games in this year’s CHL playoffs to post a victory. R.G. Flath opened the scoring  just 37 seconds into the series. Louis Dumont and Chris Richards also scored in the first period. Patrick Levesque had Mississippi’s only goal of the second period, then Evgeny Timkin, Matt Boyd and Brennan Sarazin led the third period onslaught.

Rookie Alexander Pechurskiy got the win, While Ian Keserich sustained his first regulation loss since January 2nd.

Playoffs Start Thursday

0-0:    The Tulsa Oilers having finished in third place of the Berry conference, just one point out of second, now gear up for an opening round playoff series against the Mississippi RiverKings.  The opening round is best-of-five. All playoff games can be accessed via the internet at www.tulsaoilers.com and CHL TV.

Original 6:    Although the Oilers and RiverKings are two of the original six franchises when the CHL resumed in 1992 (Mississippi was then known as the Memphis RiverKings) this is the first time the two teams have met in the playoffs.

7 Straight:    The Oilers enter the playoffs having earned points in their final seven games of the regular season. They wound up with 5-3 and 4-2 wins over Wichita and a 5-4 overtime loss to Allen.

Back 40:    Jack Combs became the first Oiler to have a 40 goal season since Todd Marcellus in 2002-03. Chad Costello led the team in scoring with 84 points on 34 goals and 50 assists in spite of missing 12 games in the regular season, and spent considerable time in the American Hockey League. Goaltender Ian Keserich led the team with 22 wins and didn’t lose in regulation time since January 2nd.

Double Duty Doubles Americans 6-3

Jack Combs had two third period power play goals igniting a three goal outburst for the Tulsa Oilers en route to a 6-3 win over the Allen Americans Friday night in Allen, Texas.

Combs first goal of the night broke a 3-3 tie. Gary Steffes scored his second goal of the game three minutes later and Combs notched his team leading 37th goal of the season midway through the period.

The Oilers led 2-1 after the first period in spite of being outshot 20-8 in the opening 20 minutes. Brian McMillin got Allen off to a fast start scoring just 50 seconds into the game. Oilers goaltender Ian Keserich befuddled the Americans the rest of the period, which gave the Oilers the chance to take the lead on goals by Steffes and Braden Walls just 26 seconds apart late in the period.

Chad Costello scored his third goal in two games since returning from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League when he deflected in a shot by Derek Eastman early in the second period. But three minutes later, Eastman drew a major penalty for boarding and on the delayed penatly Allen’s Jarret Lukin cut the Oilers lead to 3-2. When Keserich took a delay of game penalty during the major to Eastman, Jonathon Zion capitalized on the two man advantage to tie the game.

Allen took five minor penalties in the thrid period and Keserich blanked the CHL’s highest scoring team the rest of the way, finishing the night with 45 saves.

The Oilers visit the Odessa Jackalopes Saturday night at 7:05.

Controversial No Goal Costs Oilers

A controversial finish saw the Rapid City Rush defeat the Tulsa Oilers 2-1 Friday night in Rapid City. The Oilers thought they had tied the game with a last second goal, but referee Brent Coulombe ruled time expired before the puck crossed the line, and the goal light never came on.
 
Konrad Reeder opened the scoring for Rapid City tipping in a centering feed midway through the first period. Just two minutes later John Mori extended his goal scoring streak to four games for the Oilers  on a power play.
 
Reeder got his second goal of the night on a Rapid City power play at the five minute mark of the second periodl. The rest of the night belonged to Oilers goaltender Treveor Cann and Rapid City goalie Danny Battaochio.
 
The Oilers threatened on a late power play and with Cann on the bench in favor of an extra attacker stormed the goal late. Sean Erickson took a shot that created a scramble in front. The puck went into the net but as the Oiler players celebrated Coulombe waived off the goal.
 
After a tense couple of minutes as Coulombe conferred with the linesmen and the goal judge. He emerged and repeated his signal of waving off the goal igniting a a fierce protest from Oilers coach Bruce Ramsay.
 
The Oilers play at Colorado Saturday night at 8:05 Central time.

Crazy 7-5 Loss; Magic Number Now At 3

In spite of a wild 7-5 loss at Odessa Saturday night, the Tulsa Oilers saw their magic number to clinch a playoff spot reduced to three as the Laredo Bucks lost to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, 2-0.

Any combination of Oiler wins and Laredo losses adding up to three will put the Oilers in the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Each team has 10 games left to play.

On Friday the Oilers fell behind 3-0 to the Jackalopes, but began a comeback and finally managed to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:25 left to play. But Odessa took advantage of an errant pass and scored on a two man breakawy with 4:10 to play and added and empty net goal with nine seconds left.

Braden Walls scored two goals for the Oilers who also got goals from Sean Erickson, John Mori and Mike Wirll. Odessa’s top line of Sebastien Thinel, Todd Robinson, and Mike Ramsay had 15 points on the night. Thinel had three goals and three assists, Robinson had two goals and three assists, and Ramsay had one goal and three assists. Kenny Corupe accounted for Odessa’s other goal.

The same two teams play Saturday night in Odessa at 7:05 p.m.
