Oilers Ink Two Young Players For Final Playoff Push

TULSA, OK – The Tulsa Oilers of the Central League have announced the signing of forward Drew Fisher and defenseman Travis Mealy.  Both players will suit up for the Oilers Saturday night in Missouri as Tulsa looks for a second straight win against the Mavericks.

Fisher, a 6’3” 215 pound Minnesota native, joins the Oilers after spending the last two seasons at Bemidji State University.  The 25-year old Fisher is a former Bemidji teammate of Oilers forward Ryan Cramer and former line mate of Oilers forward David Solway when the two played junior hockey for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL.

Mealy spent the last two years patrolling the blue line at the University of Manitoba.  A 5’11” 205 pound defenseman, Mealy played six seasons of major-junior hockey before beginning a collegiate career at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Oilers forward Gerome Giudice and defenseman Jay Sprague have been placed on 10-day injured reserve, making room on the roster for Fisher and Mealy.

The Oilers are coming off a 4-3 victory over Arizona at home on Friday and trail Rio Grande Valley by eight points for the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference.

Tulsa Snaps Skid With 4-3 Victory Over Arizona

TULSA, OK – In a game they had to have to avoid falling further out of playoff contention, the Tulsa Oilers didn’t do themselves any favors in the first period of their Friday night tilt with the Arizona Sundogs.  Tulsa surrendered the first three goals of the game then bounced back with four unanswered tallies in a 4-3 win over the Sundogs in front of 4,803 at the BOK Center.

Nathan O’Nabigon put the visitors on the board less than three minutes into the game when he re-directed Luke Erickson’s feed past Oilers goalie Ian Keserich.  With under four minutes to go in the opening frame, Arizona got goals from Erickson and Kyle Hood just 17 seconds apart.  After Hood’s marker, Keserich was pulled and Steve Christie took over in net for Tulsa.  Gary Steffes saved the period for the Oilers by scoring on a hard charge to the net with 1:21 left before intermission.

The Tulsa offense, which had failed to score three goals in 11 of the previous 12 outings, finally came to life in the second period.  Veteran winger Michel Beausoleil pulled the Oilers back within a goal at 11:09 and the game was tied less than two minutes later when Oilers captain Tyler Fleck snapped home a shot from between the circles.  Steffes deflected in the go-ahead marker at 16:57 and gave the Oilers four goals on the scoreboard for the first time since defeating Dayton 4-2 on February 14th.

Tulsa held off the Arizona attack in the third period and killed off late Sundogs powerplay to preserve the victory.

For the Oilers, it was just the second win in the last ten games.  The two points proved especially valuable after Rio Grande Valley posted a 5-4 win over Dayton earlier in the evening.  Tulsa remains eight points out of fourth place in the Berry Conference and returns to action tomorrow at Missouri.

Oilers Weekly Media Release – March 12, 2012

Week In Review:  The Oilers went 0-3-1 last week and remain outside the playoff picture in the Berry Conference.  Last Tuesday at home, Tulsa suffered a 3-1 setback at the hands of Rapid City with Jeff Terminesi scoring the Oilers only goal of the game.  Against Quad City on Friday, the Oilers battled back from three, one-goal deficits and Ryan Cramer tied the game at 3-3 late in the third period with his first goal in 17 games.  Mallards rookie sensation Jared Brown blasted home the game winning goal just 22 seconds into overtime, but the Oilers managed secure a valuable point.  Tulsa visited Quad City the next night and trailed by a goal in the third period when the Mallards slammed the door shut with three goals in the span of two minutes to send the Oilers to a 6-2 loss.  The weekend concluded in Missouri where the Oilers were shutout for the only the second time this season.  The 4-0 loss to the Mavs was the Oilers eighth straight road defeat.

Playoff Pursuit:  Tulsa began the week only one point behind Rio Grande Valley for the fourth and final Berry Conference playoff spot.  Now, thanks to the Oilers losses this week and three wins for the Killer Bees, Tulsa finds itself six points out of fourth place.  The Oilers have just one win in their last nine games while the Bees have victories in six of their last seven contests.  Tulsa has seven games remaining (5 home, 2 away) and Rio Grande Valley has five left to play (2 home, 3 away).  The Bees begin a three-game Turner Conference road trip on Wednesday at Bloomington.

Shots+Chances=Nothing:  In four games last week, the Oilers averaged 36 shots on goal but only scored six times.  Tulsa has failed to score three goals in 10 of its last 11 outings and has a record of 2-7-2 in those games.  The Oilers also had 19 powerplays last week, but didn’t score any goals on the man-advantage.

White Is Not Alright:  The Oilers, who have been wearing their white jerseys on the road in the second half of the season, haven’t won a road game since a 1-0 victory at Texas on January 27.  Tulsa has more road losses (19) than any other team in the CHL.  Since the calendar turned to 2012, the Oilers are 3-11-2 in games away from the comfort of the BOK Center.  During the current eight-game road skid, Tulsa has been outscored 31-9.

Ullrich Finalist For ROY:  The CHL announced Wednesday that Oilers center Mike Ullrich is a finalist for the league’s Rookie of the Year award.  Ullrich is on the final ballot with Jared Brown (F-Quad City), Andrew Courtney (F-Missouri), Bryan Gillis (G-Evansville), and Mark Guggenberger (G-Texas).  Serving as the Oilers top-line center all season, Ullrich has tallied 25 goals and 28 and is tied for the team lead in points.  Ullrich’s goal total is not only tops on the Tulsa roster, but tied for first among all CHL rookies.  The 25-year old out of Banff, Alberta has recorded two hat-tricks and 12 multiple-point games this season.  Ullrich is tied for the team lead with seven powerplay goals and is one of only six players to appear in all 59 games this season.

Oilers End Weekend With Shutout Loss at Missouri

INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Missouri Mavericks continued their mastery over the Tulsa Oilers on Sunday afternoon, posting a 4-0 victory on home ice and beating the Oilers for the fifth time in as many games.

Mavs goalie Charlie Effinger stopped 32 shots and picked up his third shutout as the Oilers were kept off the scoreboard for just the second time this season.

Missouri forward Brandon Coccimiglio broke a scoreless tie at the 8:43 mark of the second period when he snapped a pass from Dale Mahovsky past Tulsa netminder Ian Keserich.

Still down a goal midway through the third, the Oilers found themselves shorthanded and the Mavericks found the insurance marker.  Dave Pszenyczny’s point shot was tipped on goal by Andrew Courtney and Kris Hogg was there to slide the rebound past Keserich.  Five minutes later, the Mavericks capitalized on another powerplay, this time it was Sebastien Thinel who pounded a rebound into the back of net to give Missouri a 3-0 lead.  John-Scott Dickson added an empty-net tally and the victory moved the Mavs into sole possession of third place in the Turner Conference.

With Rio Grande Valley idle, the Oilers missed an opportunity to close the gap in the Berry Conference playoff race.  Tulsa, which has seven games remaining, still sits six points back of the Killer Bees for fourth place.

The Oilers have now dropped eight straight road games and have scored two goals or less in 11 of their last 12 contests.

Next up for the Oilers is a Friday matchup at the BOK Center against the Arizona Sundogs at 7:35 p.m. It’s youth jersey night at the rink and the first 500 fans (12 and under) will receive a free Oilers youth jersey.

Oilers Struggles Continue In 6-2 Loss To Mallards

MOLINE, IL – In a battle of two playoff hungry teams, it was the Quad City Mallards who showed how to find the back of the net in Saturday’s 6-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers at i wireless arena.

The Oilers, who fell in overtime on Friday to the Mallards, peppered Quad City goalie David McKee with 39 shots but only Gary Steffes and Dylan Clarke were successful in solving the Mallards netminder.

After a scoreless first period, Quad City came to life in the middle frame with goals from Justin Hofstetter, John Snowden and Justin Chwedoruk.  Steffes’ late tally pulled the Oilers back within two as they headed to the second intermission.

Dylan Clarke, who recorded a season-high 12 shots on goal, scored on a partial breakaway at the 14:18 mark of the third to cut the Quad City lead to one and give the Oilers hope.  The momentum was promptly squashed by an onslaught of Mallards offense.  Quad City, which got goals from Brandon Marino, Chwedoruk, and Sean Flanagan, scored three times in the span of two minutes to put the game away.

The loss is the Oilers seventh straight road setback and their record dropped to 1-6-1 in the last eight overall.

Tulsa will conclude the weekend at Missouri on Sunday.

Oilers Find Timely Offense, Still Lose To Mallards in OT

TULSA, OK – Three times the Oilers trailed Quad City by a goal on Friday night. Three times the Oilers battled back to tie the game. The Mallards denied Tulsa two valuable points just 22 seconds into overtime when Jared Brown scored to give Quad City a 4-3 victory. The Oilers single point, coupled with a Rio Grande Valley win over Arizona means Tulsa is now four points out of a playoff spot.

Brandon Marino, Quad City’s leading scorer, put the visitors on the board early. Two minutes into the opening period, Marino buried a pass from Justin Chwedoruk past Oilers goalie Ian Keserich. Tulsa captain Tyler Fleck responded with a slap –shot blast from the point that beat David Brown over the glove to tied the game at 1-1.

The first few minutes of the second period mirrored the first. Mickey Lang put the Mallards up 2-1 at 2:05 and Gary Steffes brought the Oilers back even at 4:15 by nudging a puck past Brown.

The two sides remained even until late in the third period. Quad City defenseman Jared Lavender ripped a booming drive from outside the Oilers blue line that somehow found its way through the legs of Keserich to give the Mallards a 3-2 advantage with 6:45 to play in regulation. Four minutes later, the desperate Oilers found the equalizer once again, this time from the stick of Ryan Cramer. Mallards defensemen Taylor Vichorek blocked Cramer’s first offering, but Tulsa’s rookie winger corralled the rebound and beat Brown to level the score yet again. The tally brought an end to Cramer’s 17-game goal drought.

Due to off-setting penalties at the end of regulation, the overtime period began with 3-on-3 hockey. After an Oilers turnover behind their own goal, the open ice led to an open Jared Brown. The CHL rookie scoring leader made no mistake on his point-blank wrist shot.

The Oilers scored three goals for the first time in ten games, but fell to 0-6 in overtime contests this season. Tulsa travels to Quad City on Saturday night to complete the home-and-home weekend series.
