Oilers Weekly Media Release – January 9, 2012

Week In Review:  With a few days off after returning from Rapid City last weekend, the Oilers continued their travels with stops at Missouri and Wichita.  Friday against the Mavericks, bad bounces proved costly.  Three of the four Missouri goals went into the net off of Oilers players.  Tulsa tied the game at two early in the third period, but a pair of goals from Brandon Coccimiglio gave Missouri the cushion it needed to hold for a 4-3 win.  The Mavs have now taken both meetings this season with the Oilers.  Saturday in Wichita, the Oilers once again found themselves tied in the third period but the Thunder surged ahead with four unanswered goals for a 6-2 victory.  The game featured four fights and a season-high 54 penalty minutes for the Oilers.  The win gives Wichita a 5-4 edge in the season series with two games still to be played.

Forwards Respond After Long Layoff:  Gerome Giudice and Jason Weeks were both back on the ice last Friday after lengthy absences from the lineup.  Giudice, who spent the last two seasons playing in Italy, had been on injured reserve and out of action since November 13.  Weeks appeared in seven games through the first two months of the season but hadn’t suited up since December 4.  It didn’t take long for the forward duo to make a contribution.  Late in the second period against the Mavericks, Weeks re-directed a Giudice pass into the net for his third goal of the season.  The next night in Wichita, Giudice found Weeks again for a tally to tie the game early in the third period.  Weeks is now +6 in the nine games he’s played this season, and his four goals have come on just 16 shots.  Giudice is +4 with four points in five games.

Bell Behind the Bench:  Veteran Gord Bell filled in as Oilers coach for the last two games in the absence of Bruce Ramsay who took a leave of absence to attend to a family matter.  Bell, who underwent season-ending knee surgery in December, played the first five games of the season for the Oilers and accounted for two assists.  An Alberta native, Bell played two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers and two seasons with the Amarillo Gorillas before joining the Oilers in 2010.  Bell is proving his hockey versatility this year, spending time as a player, coach, and color commentator on the Oilers broadcasts.

Erickson Gets The Call: Defenseman Sean Erickson became the first Oilers player of the season to be called up to the AHL.  The Oklahoma City Barons, an affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, were in need of Erickson’s services during a recent three-game road trip.  Erickson got his first taste of AHL action last Wednesday at Lake Erie where he finished with a +1 rating and 2 PIM in a 3-2 Barons victory.  Prior to the call-up, Erickson had appeared in every game this season for Tulsa.  With 22 points, the University of Connecticut product is still among the CHL leaders in defensive scoring.

On The Road Again…and Again…and Again: Beginning on December 30 in Rapid City, the Oilers began a 12-game stretch with 10 of those contests on the road.  Tulsa finally returns home this Saturday to host Allen after dropping four in a row away from the BOK Center.  The Oilers will head down to Allen next Monday, return home for a Tuesday date with Missouri, and then embark on a season-long five-game road trip.  Over these 12-games, every single opponent the Oilers have faced or will face has a winning record.

Youth Jersey Night:  Don’t forget, this Saturday is Youth Jersey Night as the Oilers take on the Allen Americans at 7:35pm at the BOK Center.  The first 500 kids (12 & under) through the door will receive a free Oilers jersey.  Show up early because the jerseys will go fast!

Oilers Give Up Five In Third, Lose To Thunder 6-2

WICHITA, KS – The only remaining members of the original CHL played a hockey game reminiscent of the style of hockey seen throughout the league in the mid-90’s.  Tulsa and Wichita engaged in four fights and combined for 90 penalty minutes in a 6-2 Thunder win at the Intrust Bank Arena on Saturday night.

The game was even at 1-1 through two periods but the flood gates opened for Wichita in the third.  After Jason Weeks evened the game at two, the Thunder exploded for four unanswered goals.  Thomas Beauregard had a pair, Matt Robinson chipped in a goal, and defenseman Justin Sawyer capped off a convincing win with a powerplay tally with just four seconds left on the clock.

Oilers defenseman Tyler Sheldrake, brought to Tulsa for his toughness and fighting ability, lived up to his reputation in a bout with Sawyer just after the final Thunder goal.  Before the last seconds ticked off, Oilers center Mike Ullrich dropped the gloves with Donaghy.

In just his second game back after spending most of the season on injured reserve, Oilers forward Gerome Giudice dropped the gloves twice, once in the first period against Aaron Davis and again in the second period against Dustin Donaghy.  The 54 penalty minutes for the Oilers is a season-high.

A frustrating third period for the Oilers ended with a fourth straight loss and a fifth straight setback on the road.  Wichita now leads the season series with Tulsa 5-4 with two more meetings in Wichita upcoming.  The Oilers will get a week off before return home to face Allen on January 14.

Bad Bounces Doom Oilers in 4-3 Loss to Mavericks

INDEPENDENCE, MO – A round disk of frozen rubber can be unpredictable.  The Oilers found out the hard way on Friday night in a 4-3 loss to the Missouri Mavericks in front of 5,502 at the Independence Events Center.

The Mavericks, who picked up just their fifth home win of the season, opened the scoring in the second period when Ryan Jardine’s pass bounced off a diving Tyler Fleck and ricocheted behind goaltender Mike Garman.  Missouri made it 2-0 when a turnover in the Oilers zone resulted in a wide open John-Scott Dickson who buried a wrister past the glove of Garman.

Inserted into the Oilers lineup for the first time in over a month, Jason Weeks put the Oilers on the board when he tipped Gerome Giudice’s shot over the shoulder of Charlie Effinger.  Weeks’ third of the season pulled the Oilers back within a goal.

Just 4:30 into the third, Troy Ofukany capitalized on a rebound and Tulsa found itself tied up at 2-2.

Then the hockey gods struck again.

Mavs forward Brandon Coccimiglio scooted down the right wing and threw the puck toward the Tulsa net.  It was knocked out of mid-air by Oilers defenseman Luke Lucyk, who while trying to make a good defensive play, inadvertently swatted the disc into his own net.  Just 97 seconds later, Coccimiglio struck again, this time on a powerplay to push the Missouri lead to 4-2.  Gary Steffes answered back for Tulsa with a powerplay marker of his own, but the Oilers could not get the equalizer and fell to the Mavs for the second time this season.

Tulsa has lost three straight and four in a row on the road.  The weekend trip continues to tomorrow when the Oilers head to Wichita for the ninth meeting of the season with the Thunder.

Oilers Weekly Media Release – January 2, 2012

Week In Review:  The week began with the Oilers earning their fifth win in six games after a 5-3 victory at home on Tuesday night over the Allen Americans.  Rookie forward Dylan Clarke recorded his first career hat-trick, Gary Steffes chipped in a pair of goals, and the Oilers overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat the Americans for third time this season.  Goaltender Ian Keserich picked up his 14th win of the season with a 37-save effort.

The Oilers hit the road for South Dakota and faced off against Rapid City on back to back nights.  In Friday’s contest, Tulsa’s two-goal lead evaporated as the Rush scored twice on the powerplay to send the game to overtime.  With only a minute left in the bonus period, Jesse Schultz tapped in the game-winning goal to give Rapid City a narrow 3-2 victory.  Twenty-four hours later, the two sides were at it again.  Rapid City exploded for four goals in the second period and coasted to 6-2 win for a sweep of the weekend series.  Tulsa is now 0-3 against the Rush this season and just 1-8 all-time in games played in Rapid City.

New Standard Set By Standish:  With a goal in Friday’s loss to Rapid City, Tulsa center Marty Standish recorded his 650th professional point.  In a career that spans 13 seasons and eight teams, the Saskatchewan native has amassed 253 goals and 397 assists in 789 games.  Most of those games have come in the Central Hockey League with the Oklahoma City Blazers and the Oilers.  Standish ranks eighth all-time in the CHL in games played with 590.  The 33-year old who began his career in 1999, has 3 goals and 11 assists this season for Tulsa.

“Termi” To Start In All-Star Game: Head Coach Bruce Ramsay admits he had no idea what he was getting when he brought Jeff Terminesi to Oilers training camp.  What Ramsay and the Oilers got was an All-Star caliber defenseman.  In his first season of professional hockey, Terminesi has been selected as a starter for the 2012 CHL All-Star Game on January 11 in Prescott Valley, Arizona.  Terminesi, who has appeared in every game this season for Tulsa, has 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) and is tied for the scoring lead among CHL defenseman.  The 24-year old from Mississauga, Ontario leads the Oilers with 13 powerplay points.  It won’t be Terminesi’s first All-Star experience; the rookie blue-liner was selected as an OPJHL All-Star while playing junior hockey for the Brampton Capitals during the 2006-07 season.

Rough Road Ahead: One glance at Tulsa’s upcoming schedule is all it takes to see that the Oilers have their work cut out for them in the month of January.  The next ten games are all against teams with a winning record and an average win percentage of .650. The Oilers only play at home twice in that stretch.   In four of those ten contests the Oilers will go head to head with conference leaders Fort Wayne and Allen.  It’s an important month for the Oilers who stand third in the Berry Conference and continue to push toward the postseason.

Tulsa Adds Toughness: New Oilers forward Tyler Sheldrake put on a Tulsa jersy for the first time against Allen back on Tuesday night.  Acquired in a trade from Quad City last week, Sheldrake brings a level of toughness and grit to the Oilers lineup.  The 22-year old, who has also spent time with the Mississippi Riverkings and Corpus Christi Ice Rays, is known around the CHL for his fighting prowess.  The reputation as a tough guy is one Sheldrake embraces.  “Everybody has their role to play to make the team whole,” said Sheldrake.  “If that’s my role, I enjoy doing it.  You always have to stick up for your teammates no matter what and I like to get the crowd fired up and it’s always good to get the boys fired up too.”  In 16 games with Quad City this season, Sheldrake picked up a goal, an assist, and 57 penalty minutes.

Youth Jersey Night: The next Oilers home game is January 14 against the Allen Americans and it will feature one of the team’s biggest giveaways of the season.  The first 500 kids (12 and under) through the BOK Center doors will receive a free Oilers youth jersey courtesy of SuperCuts and KTUL Tulsa’s Channel 8.  The Oilers will be giving thousands of free ticket vouchers to local schools to distribute to their students.  Parents and adults who wish to attend the game can present the voucher to receive a special discounted rate.

Rush Rolls Past Oilers 6-2 On New Year’s Eve

RAPID CITY, SD – 2011 has been good to the Oilers but the year didn’t end on a winning note for Tulsa.  Behind two goals from Konrad Reeder and a strong performance in net by Danny Battochio, Rapid City controlled the final two periods of a 6-2 win on New Year’s Eve.

After a scoreless first period for the second night in a row, Mike Vaskivuo put Rapid City out front with a powerplay marker at 2:37 of the second period.  Gary Steffes quickly tied the game for Tulsa with a powerplay tally of his own but then Konrad Reeder came to life.  The sixth year pro, in his second season with the Rush, used his speed to drive to the net and beat Ian Keserich to put the Rush up 2-1.  Less than two minutes later, Reeder finished off a nifty passing play from Shawn Limpright and Collin Circelli to put the home side up by two goals.  Jesse Schultz scored for Rapid City late in the period and the Oilers found themselves down 4-1 at the second intermission.

Sean Erickson gave Tulsa hope with his goal at 14:51 of the third, but it took just 22 seconds for the Rush to respond.  Levi Lind banked a shot off a Tulsa stick and under Mike Garman to swell the lead back to three.  With Tulsa on a six-on-four powerplay late in the game, Battochio flung a puck the length of the rink that rolled into the empty net.  It’s the first goal by a netminder in Rush history and put the finishing touches on the second win in as many night for Rapid City.

Ian Keserich played the first two periods in goal for Tulsa, making 17 saves on 21 shots.  Garman took over in the third, making 10 saves on 11 shots.

The Oilers are back in action Friday night at Missouri.  Puck drops at 7:05pm for the second meeting of the season against the Mavericks.

Tulsa Falls To Rapid City in Overtime

RAPID CITY, SD – Jesse Schultz was bottled up most of evening by the Oilers defense but the Rapid City forward had the last laugh Friday night as he tapped in the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime victory for the Rush in front of 5,119 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

After a scoreless first period, Tulsa posted two quick strikes in the second.  David Solway blasted a rebound into Rush goalie Danny Battochio that pushed the netminder back into his own cage and across the goal line.  Refereee Steve Cruickshank ruled the puck had crossed the line and Solway was awarded his eighth goal of the season.  Two minutes later, the Oilers executed a perfect rush through the neutral zone that featured precision passing from Troy Ofukany to Ryan Raven to Marty Standish who found open ice and beat Battochio through the five-hole.

Tulsa’s two-goal advantage lasted until the final 26 seconds of the period when Riley Weselowski’s powerplay blast snuck by Mike Garman to put the home side on the board.

The Rush powerplay struck again at the 3:39 mark of the third.  Carl Hudson’s slap shot trickled behind Garman and Konrad Reeder poked the puck into the yawning net.

For the second time this season, Rapid City and Tulsa headed to overtime.  With the puck deep in the Oilers zone, Mark Vaskivuo drew the attention of three Tulsa defenders and slid a backhand pass to a waiting Schultz.  The veteran, who will start in the upcoming CHL All-Star Game, made no mistake at the side of the net.

Tulsa is now 0-6-1 on the season when failing to score three goals in a game and lost for just the fourth time this year when leading after two periods.  The Oilers did earn a point and will have another chance at the Rush tomorrow night in the second game of this back-to-back series.  The puck drops at 8:05 CST and it will be the third overall meeting between Rapid City and Tulsa.
