Oilers Beat Rush 3-2

Brendon Hodge’s power play goal with 8:09 left in the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Tulsa Oilers to a 3-2 win over the Rapid City Rush Saturday night.

The win ended a five game winless streak for the Oilers. Bobby Reed opened the scoring for Tulsa just 1:54 into the game, snapping a wrist shot through the legs of Lanny Ramage. Rapid City answered back on goals by Blaine Jarvis and Jon Pelle. But just 26 seconds after Pelle’s goal, Jeff Christian tied it for the Oilers.

It stayed that way until Hodge’s goal. The Oilers will play their next game and first game under head Tony Martino Tuesday against the Texas Brahmas at the BOK Center at 7:05 p.m. 

Late Rush Sink Oilers, 4-2

The Rapid City Rush scored in the final minute of each period en route to a  4-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers Friday night in Rapid City.

After Mike Mullen and Jason Lawmaster scored in the first period to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead, Kyle Sheen cut the lead to 2-1 with 23 seconds left in the first period. It stayed that way until Mark DeSantis scored on a breakaway with 2:05 left in the second period and Gio Flamminio gave the Rage the lead with 13 seconds left in the period. Jon Pelle scored into an empty net with 34 seconds left to seal the victory.

Earlier in the day, the Oilers announced Tony Martino is the team’s new coach. He is expected to coach his first game Tuesday night.

The Oilers and Rush play again Saturday night in Rapid City at 8:05 in a game that can be heard on www.tulsaoilers.com.

Oilers Name Tony Martino Coach

 

            Tony Martino, the feisty goaltender who led the Tulsa Oilers to the 1992-93 Central Hockey League championship will return to the Oilers as the team’s next head coach. Martino is expected to coach his first game Tuesday night when the Oilers host the Texas Brahmas at 7:05  at the BOK Center.

            He will follow general manager Taylor Hall who has coached the team on an interim basis, since the Oilers replaced Dan Hodge.

            “Tony brings the experience and years of recruiting contacts we’re looking for in a coach,” Hall said. “Our fans know all about the passion he brings to the game.”

            The 44 year old Martino led the Oilers to the first league championship when the CHL reformed in 1992. He was the goaltender of the year that season.

He has coached the New Mexico Scorpions (in the Western Professional Hockey League prior to the merger with the CHL in 2001) and the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League His experience also includes scouting with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL.

“I know all of our fans remember how fiery of a competitor Tony was as a player,” Oilers owner and team president Jeff Lund said. “We’re looking forward to him bringing that same spirit behind the bench as our head coach.”

“I’m excited about coming back to Tulsa. I remember the glory days and want to bring it back to that level,” Martino said. “There’s nothing but positives about the Oilers and the city of Tulsa. I understand the building (the BOK Center) is NHL caliber and that’s great for the fans and the city to have that standard in Tulsa.”

Fans will have the chance to meet Martino at Cowboy Sharkies at 58th and Memorial Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Oilers weekly coach’s show.

Royal Bummer, Oilers Fall 5-3

The Tulsa Oilers scored first and last, but unfortunately got outscored 5-1 in between and lost to the Mississippi RiverKings 5-3 Saturday night at the BOK Center.

Jeff Christian defelected in Brendon Hodge’s shot to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead, but Andrew Lackner, Brad Bonello and Garret Larson all answered for Mississippi before the first period ended.

Dallas Constanzo stretched the visitors’ lead to 4-1 before Jake Riddle scored his third goal in as many games since returning from a knee injury Christmas night.

Mississippi bumped its lead to 5-2 thanks to Matt Pierce and Bobby Reed closed out the scoring for the Oilers with just one second left in the game.

The Oilers will host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. It will be Two Dollar Tuesday with beer and soft drinks available for just $2.

Penalties Cost Oilers In 6-3 Loss

The Wichita Thunder took advantage of two 5-on-3 full two minute power plays en route to a 6-3 win over the Tulsa Oilers Friday night at the BOK Center.

Wichita out scored the Oilers 3-0 in the second period with two goals coming while Wichita had a two man advantage, and the third goal coming just after the Oilers returned to full strength.

The teams swapped four goals in a 2:04 span in the first period. Troy Ofukany gave Wichita the lead, which was quickly wiped out by goals by R.J. Linder and Jeff Christian in a 28 second span but then Curtiss Patrick tied the game just 38 seconds later.

In the second period Jason Tessier scored twice with Wichita having a two man advantage, and Bryan Nathe made it 5-2 just after the Oilers returned to full strength, following the second five on three skating advantage of the period.

The Oielrs got a little life as Jake Riddle deflected in a shot from the point three and a half minutes into the third period. But Tessier got his hat trick (and the fifth goal of the night by Wichita defensemen) into an empty net with 35 seconds left.

The Oilers host the Mississippi RiverKings Saturday at 7:35 p.m.

Holiday Happenings

 

 

Get Busy:        The Tulsa Oilers begin one of the busiest stretches of the season Christmas night at Oklahoma City at 7:10 p.m. That begins a run of seven games in 10 days for the Oilers. They play at home Friday against the Wichita Thunder at 7:35 p.m. and host the Mississippi RiverKings Saturday at 7:35 p.m. All games can be heard via the internet at www.tulsaoilers.com.

 

Muddy Week: The Oilers faced the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs twice last week. They lost 4-3 in a shootout Friday night at Bossier-Shreveport and dropped a 5-2 decision at home on Saturday.

 

Quickly Now: The Oilers scored two goals in 18 seconds on Friday night and got all three of their goals in a 2:37 span in that game.

 

Hot Line:         The trio of Sean Collins, Jeff Christian and Mike Beausoleil continues to befuddle opposing defenses. In the two games last week, Collins figured in four of the five Oiler goals with two goals and two assists. Christian also had four points with a goal and three assists and Beausoleil had a goal and assist.

 

First Timer:      Defenseman Cody Hamilton scored his professional goal Saturday night. It came at 16:27 of the second period and was assisted by two other rookies, Mike Mullen and Jereme Tendler.

 

Order Up:        Instead of dishing out goals and body checks Monday night, the Oilers will be dishing out ribs and catfish at Runt’s Bar-B-Q. The Oilers will be serving as waiters from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Runts. All tips to the Oilers will be donated to the Salvation Army. The Oilers coach’s show will take place Tuesday night this week at 7 p.m. at Cowboy Sharkies.

Oh Buggers! Oilers Drop Shootout, 4-3

In a game that saw quick scoring outbursts by both teams, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs came away with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Tulsa Oilers Friday night in Bossier City.

Bossier-Shreveport got two first period goals from Travis Clayton just 1:31 apart late in the first period. The Oilers eliminated that deficit with three goals, two by Sean Collins, and one by Jeff Christian in a span of only 2:37 late in the second period. The Oilers’ first two goals came just 18 seconds apart as Tulsa capitalized on both ends of a two man advantage.

The lead disappeared early in the third period as Chris Brassard tied it for Bossier-Shreveport. The teams then battled through the final 18:34 of regulation and five minute overtime to set up the shootout.

Joe Blaznek and Chris Smith of Bossier-Shreveport scored in the shootout while Jon Horrell was able to thwart Christian, Brendon Hodge, Cody Hamilton and Mike Beausoleil.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at the BOK Center at 7:35 p.m. Fans are asked to bring a new or gently used coat to donate to the Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless, which will be collected by the Tulsa Town Trolley parked in front of the BOK Center prior to the game. Fans who donate will receive a free ticket to the game.  The Oilers are also spnosoring a holiday sweater contest with prizes awarded to the fans who come dressed in their best holiday apparel.    

Jumpin’ Jacks Gas Oilers, 6-2

The Odessa Jackalopes took advantage of a depleted Tulsa Oilers defensive corps en route to a  6-2 win Friday night in Odessa.

The Oilers were without defenseman Jason Lawmaster who was serving a one game suspension, and then lost defenseman Kevin Hansen for the balnce of the game when he was boarded by Brian Swiniarski with a minute and a half left in the first period. Hansen lay motionless on the ice for some time before being helped off.

Odessa got first period goals from Dominic Leveille and Mike Ramsay, and then blew it open midway through the second period on goals by Kory Karlander, Sebastien Thinel and Swiniarski in a 2:43 span. Karlander got his second of the night sandwiched between Oiler third period goals from Brendon Hodge and Peter Kennedy. Mike Beausoleil saw his point streak end at 17 games, tied for the lognest streak in the CHL this season.

The Oilers play the Oklahoma City Blazers Saturday night at 7:10 p.m. in Oklahoma City.

Oilers Sign Mullen; Trade Magnussen

    The Tulsa Oilers who have won two of their last three games, have made a couple of roster moves.
    The Oilers traded right winger Kai Magnussen to the Rocky Mountain Rage in exchange for future considerations, and signed free agent right winger Mike Mullen.
    Magnussen had scored two goals and two assists in 16 games with the Oilers this season. Mullen, began the season with the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL, and that team recently ceased operations.
    “Mike obviously comes from a great hockey family and can bring a lot of speed and offense to our line up,” Oilers coach Dan Hodge said.
    Mullen’s father Joe was the Central Hockey League Rookie of the Year in 1979-80 and went on to win three Stanley Cups during a Hall of Fame career.
    The 5-foot-11, 175 pound Mullen had two goals and seven assists for nine points in 18 games with Augusta this season. The 25-year old rookie played at New England College where he was a teammate of Oiler Mike Carmody.
    Mullen will be with the Oilers when they play at Odessa Friday at 7:05 p.m. and at Oklahoma City on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. the next Oilers home game is Saturday Dec. 20th against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at 7:35 p.m. All Oiler games are available at www.tulsaoilers.com.

Deja Vu

Been There:    The Tulsa Oilers will repeat their games from last weekend, this weekend. The Oilers play at Odessa against the Jackalopes for the second straight Friday at 7:05 p.m. and then will battle the Oklahoma City Blazers for the second straight Saturday, this week at Oklahoma City at 7:10 p.m.  All Oilers games are available at www.tulsaoilers.com.

Solid Week:    The Oilers won two of three games last week, taking home ice wins against Texas, 2-1 on Tuesday and Oklahoma City 3-1 on Saturday. The Oilers dropped a hard fought 3-1 decision at Odessa on Friday.

Stingy:    While the Oilers are generous souls off the ice they had a Scrooge like week, surrendering just five goals in three games. The Oilers were even tighter defensively at home, giving up just one goal in each of the last two home games.

Still Rolling:    Mike Beausoleil continues racking up points. He stretched his point streak to 17 games with a goal and three assists last week. He now has points in 17 straight games, which is the longest current streak in the CHL and tied for the longest of the season in the league. Beausoleil leads the Oilers in scoring with 8 goals and 21 assists for 29 points, which ties him for third place in the CHL scoring race.

All Collins:    Sean Collins figured in all three goals against Oklahoma City with two goals and an assist. Collins is averaging a point a game for the Oilers with two goals and two assists for four points in four games.

Holiday Stuff:    Fans won’t see the Oilers at home until December 20th, against Bossier-Shreveport. But fans can still take advantage of purchasing the Oilers Holiday pack of 10 tickets for just $99.
